Flak Photo and The Reviews at Santa Fe

Date June 23, 2008

© Kathryn Parker Almanas

For anyone who reads this blog it will not come to a surprise if I say that one of the best sites in the web to enjoy photography and discover emerging talent is Flak Photo, run and edited by Andy Adams. This summer Flak Photo embarks in a wonderful effort [see here] to show the best photography around. This is a project shared with Center [formerly the Santa Fe Center for Photography]:

The feature is the most ambitious project I've undertaken with flakphoto.com since launching the blog two years ago - the Review Santa Fe project will show 55 photographers over 11 weeks. I'll be publishing a selection of work from this year's RSF photographers weekdays from June 16 - August 29, 2008.- Andy Adams

This is an exclusive opportunity to see the work of excellent photographers that attended the two-day conference in Santa Fe this last June 5-7th. The Review Santa Fe is perhaps the best known and prestigious reviewing event of photography in the USA, with only 100 selected photographers attending the last event. Flak Photo will share the work of fifty five of them photographers in the coming weeks.

Flak Photo is pleased to team up with Center to feature a selection of images from Review Santa Fe, an annual juried portfolio review for photographers who have created a significant project or series and are seeking wider recognition. This year's conference was held in Santa Fe on June 5-7, 2008. In support of the event, Flak Photo highlights fifty-five of these photographers over the course of the summer and includes images from Myra Greene, Thomas Broening, Julie Denesha, Andrew Kaufman, Jennifer Boomer, Peter Snyder, Myriam Abdelaziz, John Abousief, Keliy Anderson-Staley, Jessica Auer, Justyna Badach, Alexia Beckerling, Andrew Beckham, Elise Bloom, Mara Bodis-Wollner, Tami Bone, Caleb Charland, Dylan Chatain, Javier Eligio Chavarria, Meghan Cronrath, Stephen Dahl, Scott Dalton, Rachael Dunville, Davin Ellicson, Linda Foard Roberts, Steve Hanson, Angela Jimenez, Barbara Karant, Marvi Lacar, Doug Landreth, Rose Marasco, Bryce Marback, Felicia Michaels, Ella Naef, Katie Orlinsky, Kate Orne, Eric Percher, Coleen Plumb, Sarah Renkes, Felix Rodriguez Cid, Mike Schwartz, Brian Shumway, Rebecca Sittler Schrock, Sarah Small, Fernando Souto, Stuart Sperling, Richard Stultz, Anthony Thompson, Peter Treiber, Hiroshi Watanabe, Angela Wells, Jimmy Williams and Natalie Young.

Thanks Andy for taking on this initiative. It will be a treat to follow every week this summer.

UnScene: a great opportunity to exhibit your work

Date May 16, 2008

UnScene is a fantastic concept and a great opportunity for emerging artists that like to jump forward their careers and exhibit their work [in the USA]. To learn more about UnScene go here.

The most innovative concept is that it is a moving tour, traveling the USA, and arranging exhibits for emerging artists at different locations in collaboration with W Hotels and local galleries. Pro or amateur photographers can submit their $25 entry fee along with a portfolio with up to 20 photos to unscenetour for a chance to win their own exhibition at a popular gallery. See below for upcoming tours to cities in the USA during 2008 and to learn more about the next UnScene exhibit in Dallas.

Thank you Jeannine Schechter Jacobi for passing along information about the project.

Coming soon, [May 14th -18th], and billed by the organizers as the future of contemporary photography, the five day event will exhibit a large collection of photography around several warehouses and pavilions covering more than 75,ooo square feet.

It is organized by Daniel Power, founder and CEO of powerHouse Books and Frank Evers, managing director of VII Photo Agency. The event will take place at DUMBO, an area in Brooklyn, just below the Manhattan Bridge overpass, that it is becoming the New York Photo district, and it is signaling the need to find alternatives to the "establishment" of Chelsie galleries.

© Raymond Meeks

I find the work of Raymond Meeks really fascinating. He uses various types of traditional printing to create wonderful images. Pictures that convey "emotional density". Part of his creative work include the craft of unique artist books.

Raymond's work is now in exhibition at Candace Dwan Gallery in New York City until March 29th, 2008.

“Vessels” by Irving Penn

Date February 27, 2008

© Irving Penn

Recent work by the legendary fashion/portrait photographer Irving Penn. It is extraordinary the delicacy and sensitivity of his work, the grace of his portraits reflected in still life images. In exhibition at Pace/MacGill gallery in New York City, from February 21st to March 29th, 2008. See some of the images here.

Mr.Penn (b.1917) has made still life photographs since the beginning of his career. In fact, one of them appeared as his first cover at Voge in October 1943. Now in his 91st year, these new images mark Penn's return to familiar forms. The objects are more than mementos, they are long-time companions. In fact several of the vessels in this exhibition have appeared in previous photographs made decades earlier [from the press release].

“Cinemascapes”, the visual fascination of Aaron Hobson

Date February 12, 2008

© Aaron Bobson

Few months ago I had the opportunity to learn about the work of Aaron Hobson, an emerging photographer from upstate New York that in just few years has defined a distinct style and is making significant inroads in the fine art market. His work is quite unique in that combines the perspective of panoramic photography with well staged compositions where he is his own subject. The panoramic perspective makes difficult to display the images in this post, so please take a look at website or at this Chinese online magazine.

The images are both dense with information, and easy to visualize. The perfect balance between the elements in the scenery and the subject is so well crafted that the focal point of attention becomes the whole picture itself. Quite a unique achievement.

The lighting, the shadows, the color palette, create the texture for multiple elements so well staged that life emerges from the pictures. So real and so surreal. So immediate, so personal and at the same time so fictional.

A self-taught designer and self-taught photographer, Aaron's work conveys the emotional impact of realities that don't exist and fascinates the viewer with images that raise curiosity and wonder about the subject and the landscape.

Aaron Hobson had his first solo exhibition last November in New York City at the Ivi Brown Gallery and starting in February 16th untill March 16th he will be exhibiting in London at the Tenderpixel gallery. More information about the artist can be found here.

I will explore the opportunity to dialog with him in the future so we can learn more about his artistic inspirations and objectives.

New Visions of New York City by Michael Kenna

Date January 26, 2008

© Michael Kenna

Via Gallery Hopper, I found the newest work of the great Michael Kenna, a series of New York City that was exhibited at the Robert Mann Gallery (images here) in New York.It is wonderful to see the unique "Kenna" style, with dark shadows, high contrast and clean lines. His work provides a distinct look of "perhaps" the most photographed city in the world. Few weeks ago I had the opportunity to see some of his prints and I have to say that if you ever get the chance to see a print from Michael Kenna prepare yourself to get breathless. They are so amazing.

Contemporary photography is alive and flourishing in Shanghai, China

Date January 24, 2008

It is my great pleasure to introduce a guest contributor, photographer and blogger Doug Stockdale [Singular Images], who is now in China.

He provides in this post a very interesting snapshot of his experience while visiting the fine art scene in Sanghai, at the heart of the M50 district, where modern art and fine art photography is flourishing. It is good to learn more about this amazing country and get a first hand experience on how fine art photography is getting momentum there.
