Taryn Simon

Taryn Simon is a young photographer that in a very short time has gained a notable position in her career. What is most interesting about her photography is that these are not unusual or remarkable images. It is the combination of high quality images with the significance of the message and the subject being pictured what makes her work stand out from the many. In a way, one could say, that her work explores a blend of fine art photography with photojournalism, an overlap that I find very interesting.

By exploring topics that elicit the amusement of the audience, and combining descriptive text with carefully crafted images, the work gains exposure at both journalistic media and fine art galleries,  with publication at the New York Times and exhibits at the best branded galleries like Gagosian Gallery.

Her first notable project, “The Innocents“, explored the impact of photography in the conviction of inmates that were wrongfully incarcerated and later were exonerated by DNA evidence. Her new project “An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar,” explores hidden America, topics and subjects that we are not allowed to see or are not permited to see.
