If you have some time to immerse into wonderful photography, take a look to the work of Aline Smithson. With a background as a painter, she worked as a photo editor at Vogue Patterns Magazine in New York City, to later become a fine art photographer in Los Angeles. I love the variety of subjects and styles of her work, images that are characterized by the pure essence of art in photography. Both using medium format cameras or using toy cameras Aline creates beautiful images, with projects that are both interesting and creative.

I like to highlight a couple of series that I find particularly beautiful: “People I do not know” a series with formal portraits culled from dusty cardboard boxes in thrift stores that were photographed with people of the same gender and similar age holding the old portraits. There is something powerful in these images, a connection with the past that becomes fascinating. ”Hollywood at home” is a series that makes me smile, photograph after photograph. And do not miss her exquisite work with Toy cameras.

Another treat for all of us. Alison edits the blog, “Lenscratch” sharing her views on photography, a blog that is in my “must read” list and I love.

Her wonderful sense of aesthetics and knowledge of the fine art photography world is put to work as an instructor at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. Look at her website under Workshops for a list of upcoming classes and lectures. If you live in the Los Angeles area you may be interested in attending the upcoming series “For evenings with four Fine Art Photographers” that will be moderated by Aline with the great artists Hiroshi WatanabeDouglas McCullohMona KuhnWhitney Hubbs.
