Bazan Cuba

At age 17, Ernesto had a dream that changed his life forever. A voice quite simply told me: ‘You must become a photographer’. His decision was made and he announced it the following morning to his surprised parents who eventually gave him their full support.

In 1992, Ernesto Bazan from Italy, crossed his path with the Island “Isla Juana”, so named by Christopher Columbus when it claimed it for the king of Spain during his first voyage across the Atlantinc in 1492. A beautiful island that now runs by the name Cuba. An island that became part of our own modern history as another proof of the limitations of radical socialism and dictatorship and isolation. An island that is the land of 11 million wonderful and lively people, the Cubans. An island that mixes beautiful colonial architecture, with the colors and culture of the Caribbean to create a unique place.

Ernesto Bazan, 14 years of photography, two years of editing, layout, pre-press, and printing to bring a new self-published book to the world: Bazan Cuba [website, book at photo-eye]

Dear friends and students I have got the pleasure to let you know that after many years of hard work I’ve been able to publish my book on 14 years of my life in Cuba. In May of this year accompanied by seven of my students (we have nicknamed them The Magnificent Seven) we met in a small town near Verona to help my new “baby” come to light. The book is simply called BazanCuba.

BAZANCUBA” documents the unique time in Cuban history called “The Special Period” that Bazan photographed over a 14-year period from 1992 to 2006 earning him a W. Eugene Smith Grant, the Mother Jones Foundation for Photojournalism Grant, the World Press Photo Award, two fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation Grant.
