La Pura Vida Gallery is an online gallery founded in September 2007 by Bryan Formhals with a monthly, curated slideshows of submissions to their Flickr group. It is then, in a way, a Flickr club that also becomes a monthly curated online gallery.
I have to confess that I rarely look at Flickr but when I do I always get surprised on the sporadic finding of good photographs mixed with such a huge pool of uninteresting images. I have always a hard time to navigate effectively Flickr to find the excellent photography that is there. La Pura Vida Gallery is doing something very valuable. They are bringing to live the possibilities of Flickr, and they are breaking the conventional channels so to expose excellent work to a broader community. They are making easier to enjoy excellent work with a focused aesthetic taste, as defined by the monthly editors.
Even when La Pura Vida Gallery shows selected images, I still feel that the monthly galleries maintain the randomness and folklore of Flickr. This has some benefits -diversity – but also has limitations for my preferences as I tend to enjoy more looking at series that are highly cohesive rather than a sequence of unrelated individual images.
Certainly, La Pura Vida Gallery is an step forward to explore the possibilities of the open community at Flickr.
