When I look in general at Holga, Lomo and polaroid pictures, I feel that the media itself leads me to a favorable initial impression as I tend to like the artistry of imperfect images. After a first reaction, it becomes obvious that it is indeed quite difficult to make images with toy cameras that hold the initial interest. Many of the images tend to become repetitive and so less compelling. Besides the artistry of faded colors and lack of focus, the composition, the light and the subject end up defining the quality of the image no matter how it was made. It becomes then that making good and original work with a toy camera is very difficult. This is the challenge of Yaniv Waissa’s portfolio, but I am glad to see good work there.
