Mitra Tabrizian

British Iranian photographer and filmmaker Mitra Tabrizian is a professor of photography at the University of Westminster, London, England. Her work looks to me like storytelling in single stills, where each individual image conveys a sense of intrigue and mystery that feels part of a longer storyline and, at the same time, it holds as a complete photograph with the strong intensity of the moment. It is certain that her photographs are about telling reality, telling stories, like a filmmaker can do. Visually elegant and intense.

Well, my uncle was a painter… It was almost by accident. I’d always been interested in class divisions in Tehran. They were severe. I started taking pictures. But you take pictures of the poor, and then what? Do you put them on a wall? Gradually I became familiar with critical theories, with how you read an image. I realised that regular documentary work might not necessarily be the answer.-Mitra Tabrizian
