Alec Soth’ ongoing project. America and China: The Eagle and the Dragon.

I am a big fan of Alec Soth. He is one of the best using fine art photography to document sensitive and relevant stories. He masters storytelling with fine art pictures, his books are wonderful, and if you ever see his prints you will be truly amazed, they are well beyond you can imagine by looking at the web or printed books. His prints are examples of why shooting with an 8×10 camera has true advantages in quality and a look that is different from small format.

Now Alec Soth is working in a new ongoing project, documenting the emerging new power of China and the decline [or transition, to say it more optimistically] of the USA. Quite fascinating. You can read about this ongoing project and see many images here: part 1, part 2. Future upcoming parts will be published online in the future.

Once symbolic of optimism and certainty, America’s credit-crunched suburbs may be facing a decline as dramatic as that of Detroit, itself once a beacon of industry. Mick Brown and the photographer Alec Soth continue their investigation into the contrasting fortunes of the US and China.
