Alec Soth and his approach to portrait photography
By chance I came across these three short videos of Alec Soth in Youtube.
While most portraits photographers claim the need to connect with the subject, to know the person you are photographing, Alec’s view is quite the opposite. He refers to it like to take an image of the space that separates the subject from the photographer, hidden by the privacy of the view camera, but looking at the eyes of the subject.
It is is more like an introverted view of the portrait, and perhaps because of that it captures best the essence of the person being photographed.
