© Joey Lawrence

Impressive work by Joey Lawrence a very young photographer (only 17 yr old) located in Ontario, Canada. Browse the galleries, and you will be amazed on the diversity and quality of his talent.

Art is in your perception of things. An art gallery is only ink on paper displayed in fancy frames until you look at it and perceive it through your own experiences. Each reaction is different and no excuse is needed. My work is not complete until you view it.- Joey Lawrence

Alec Soth and his approach to portrait photography

Date June 26, 2007

By chance I came across these three short videos of Alec Soth in Youtube.

While most portraits photographers claim the need to connect with the subject, to know the person you are photographing, Alec's view is quite the opposite. He refers to it like to take an image of the space that separates the subject from the photographer, hidden by the privacy of the view camera, but looking at the eyes of the subject.

It is is more like an introverted view of the portrait, and perhaps because of that it captures best the essence of the person being photographed.

David Sacks

Date June 19, 2007

© David Sacks

Professional photographer and contributor to Getty Images, David Sacks, not only has exquisite style for his commercial work but also shares a significant amount of his time to work for charities. In turn he uses these images as stock photography for Getty: both sides win. The series "performers" and the images at his website from his work with NGOs is remarkable. If you are interested there is a audio interview with David Sacks speaking about the field of stock photography. David was the winner of the Nikon PDN World in Focus 2007 competition in the category of "The Human Condition".

Phillip Toledano

Date June 15, 2007

From the Series Cubelife © Phillip Toledano

Beautiful photography by Phillip Toledano (a.k.a Mr.Toledano). Among all his great work I find particularly interesting the following series:

Cubelife - "I am fascinated with the idea of anonymity and what better place to find it than in a office"-Mr.Toledano

People - "I wanted each shot to be part of a story. As though you'd accidentally picked up the phone, and caught the middle of a conversation"- Mr.Toledano

Marks - "Our skin is like temnporary photographic paper, recording on our bodies the dayly decissions that we make."-Mr Toledano

and Bankrupt , this one published in a book- "When I started shooting bankroupt offices I found it to be more archeology than photography. Everywhere I went I found signs of life, interrupted."-Mr. Toledano

“Africa” an special issue by Vanity Fair

Date June 11, 2007

For the first time in history, a magazine publishes a series of photographs to illustrate distinct covers of the same issue. Twenty different July covers of Vanity Fair shot by Annie Leibovitz depict major world leaders and celebrities meeting one another in support of Africa, and passing the message to each other in a photographic sequence.

Not only this is in itself an impressive feat for a magazine, but it is also a first for Annie Leibovitz, as the subjects were shot at different times and locations posing in ways to allow for the photo-compositions of the images that illustrate the covers. You can see a video of the photo shoot here.

Such and original idea could come from no other than the great Bono. Listen to Bono speak about the issue here and explaining the purpose of the special issue in the introductory letter.

If you are interested in purchasing an issue with a determined cover, Amazon.com sells them all.

SeaDragon: the future of digital visual interactions

Date June 9, 2007

© TED

From TED, one of the most incredible technologies I have seen in a long time: Seadragon. It will certainly change the way we interact with digital visual information and will have large impact in the use of photography. The video talk by the author of this software, Blaise Aguera y Arcas -now at Microsoft- is here. If you are using a windows computer you may try Photosynth online with demos of spacial environments using this code.

Blaise Aguera y Arcas created Seadragon (acquired by Microsoft in 2006), the visualization technology that gives Photosynth its amazingly smooth digital rendering and zoom capabilities. Photosynth itself is a vastly powerful piece of software capable of taking a wide variety of images, analyzing them for similarities, and grafting them together into an interactive three-dimensional space. This seamless patchwork of images can be viewed via multiple angles and magnifications, allowing us to look around corners or "fly" in for a (much) closer look. Simply put, it could utterly transform the way we experience digital images.- from TED

“On the Sith Day” by Alessandra Sanguinetti

Date June 7, 2007

by Alessandra Sanguinetti

To portray an animal is to name it. Once named it acquires a new life, and then, is spared death. Each sacrifice gives us back a disturbing image of the border we cross when we end a life, and what it entails to have sole dominion over another living creature. It is possible that by exploring the fine line that separates us from what we rule, we may reach a better understanding of our own nature.- Alessandra Sanguinetti

Very interesting work by Alessandra Sanguinetti, describing the interdependence of people and domesticated animals in the countryside of Buenos Aires. With creative composition, frequently from the vantage point of her subjects, the artist acts as a witness of life and death. This work, "On the Sixth Day", was published in a book that I highly recommend. You will find more about Alessandra at American Photo. Unfortunately no website ... but you can see some images of this work here and here. Conscientious also posted other work by the artist here.

Always a fascinating source of inspiring photography, interesting readings and smart comments. I have not figured out how it is possible for J.M. Colberg to keep his photoblog so active and so charming while working full time as a scientist and building his own excellent body of photographic work ... but this is the skill of the great ones and Conscientious is the reference photoblog for all of us. Thanks indeed for referring Exposure Compensation in the list of favourite photoblogs.
